Swim Lessons
Red Cross Swim Lesson Program
The Wellness Center of URMC
The purpose of the American Red Cross Swim Program is to teach people how to be safe in, on or around water and to teach individuals of different ages and abilities to swim.
Parent and Child Aquatics
Parent and Children Aquatics familiarizes young children (from 6 months to about 3 years) to the water and prepares them to learn to swim in the American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics or Learn-to-swim courses. There are no skills requirements for this program. Class ratios are 10 students to 1 instructor. These classes are held in the Therapy Pool at the Wellness Center of URMC. Children in diapers are REQUIRED to wear swim diapers and tight fitting rubber pants or swimsuit.
Preschool Aquatics
Preschool Aquatics, consisting of 3 levels, is an integral part of the overall Red Cross instructional aquatic and water safety program. The primary objective of Preschool Aquatics is to promote the developmentally appropriate learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills by young children about 4 and 5 years old. Skills for this group include:
- Water entry and exit
- Breath control and submerging
- Buoyancy
- Changing Directions and Positions
- Treading
- Swim on front and back
- Water Safety
Learn-to-swim
Learn-to-swim teaches aquatic and personal water safety skills in a logical progression. It consists of six levels. Participants in Level 1 are oriented to the aquatic environment and gain some basic skills in each category. Throughout the levels, participants build on their basic skills to learn various propulsive movements on the front, back and side. As the levels increase, participants learn to refine the different strokes and build endurance. Each level includes exit skills assessments that put together many of the skills learned in the levels. Skills for this group include:
- Water entry and exit
- Breath control and submerging
- Buoyancy
- Changing Directions and Positions
- Treading
- Swim on front and back
- Water Safety
Class Ratios
- Parent and Child – 1 instructor to 10 students
- Preschool – 1 instructor to 6 students
- Learn to Swim – 1 instructor to 6 students

All participants should wear swim suits to classes. Children in diapers are required to wear swim diapers and tight fitting suit or rubber pants. Each participant will need to bring a towel. Arm rings (swimmies)are not allowed during swim classes.
Where can I wait for my child during lessons? All parents should wait in the Wellness Center lobby area while swim lessons are in progress, with the exception of Parent and Child participants.
